The Hermès Birkin is the pinnacle of designer bags, being the most expensive, desired and respected. Named after english actor and songstress Jane Birkin upon an encounter with the Hermès designer at an airport.
Her name has been associated with the bag since the beginning and has stuck ever since. However recently PETA performed an investigation on the Birkins production. With the animal cruelty coming to light Jane Birkin released the following statement. “Having been alerted to the cruel practices reserved for crocodiles during their slaughter to make Hermès handbags carrying my name… I have asked Hermès to debaptise the Birkin Croco until better practices in line with international norms can be put in place.”
A Hermés spokesperson released the following statement in response: “Jane Birkin has expressed her concerns regarding practices for slaughtering crocodiles. Her comments do not in any way influence the friendship and confidence that we have shared for many years. Hermès respects and shares her emotions and was also shocked by the images recently broadcast.”
will the practices be changed? We’ll keep you updated.
