Azerbaijani artist Faig Ahmed transforms traditional rug design into a modern exploration of form and perception. His work takes familiar patterns and textures from cultural rugs and reimagines them in a way that feels both playful and disorienting. The results are vibrant, dynamic, and visually striking, challenging the viewer to reconsider what is familiar.

Artistic Approach

Faig Ahmed graduated from the Sculpture Faculty at the Azerbaijan State Academy of Fine Arts in Baku in 2004. Since 2003, he has experimented with multiple mediums, including painting, video, and installation art. For his rug-inspired pieces, he deconstructs the conventional structure of Azerbaijani rugs, breaking patterns into fragments and rearranging them in unexpected ways. These fragmented motifs are then combined with contemporary sculptural forms, creating a tension between traditional craft and modern abstraction.

Why It Captivates

Ahmed’s work is both a tribute and a transformation. While the colors and motifs of traditional rugs remain recognizable, the distortions challenge symmetry, scale, and expectation. Viewers are drawn into a visual conversation between heritage and innovation, experiencing a sense of movement and fluidity within what is usually a static object.
