Took Us to a Galaxy Very, Very Camp in The Best Way
Bobby Abley Spring Summer 2016 in London did not flirt with pop culture. It cannonballed into it. This season was a full throttle love letter to Star Wars, delivered with Abley’s signature mischief and zero fear of looking unserious. If fashion is meant to be fun, this was the thesis statement.
From the first look, it was clear we were not in minimalist territory. We were in hyperspace.
The Force, But Make It Fashion
Star Wars iconography was everywhere. Not subtle references. Not vague nods. Full on character graphics splashed across tops and matching sets. It could have tipped into novelty fast. Instead, Abley committed so fully that it looped back around to genius.
The silhouettes were relaxed and youthful. Oversized tees. Easy shorts. Sporty layers. Streetwear foundations that kept the collection grounded even as the prints blasted off into fandom fantasy. The pieces felt wearable in the way your favorite graphic hoodie feels wearable. Comfort first, attitude second.
And then there was the wordplay. “I need my space” stamped across garments with a wink that practically demanded a smirk from the front row. It was cheeky, self aware, and very online before very online was the norm on runways.
Camp, Craft, and Commitment
What separates Abley from a costume shop moment is construction. The tailoring beneath the graphics was sharp. The proportions were deliberate. There was real design happening under the pop references.
Full outfits featuring Star Wars characters walked the line between absurd and iconic. Styled head to toe, they felt like a bold refusal to tone things down. Abley understands his audience. Young, playful, not afraid of a little spectacle.
It also felt refreshingly democratic. You did not need a fashion degree to get it. You just needed a sense of humor and maybe a favorite droid.
Why It Worked
Bobby Abley S/S 2016 stood out because it did not apologize for its joy. In a season where many designers chase seriousness, Abley leaned into fandom and fun. He treated Star Wars not as merch, but as cultural mythology worth remixing.
This was menswear that did not take itself too seriously, but still took design seriously. A tricky balance. One that Abley nailed.
The overall mood was clear. The Force is strong, but camp is stronger.
