When high couture meets high vanity, things get interesting. For the June/July 2015 issue of Interview Magazine, Saskia de Brauw stepped in front of Mikael Jansson’s lens for a sharp, self-aware editorial exploring the then-trending phenomenon of the selfie stick.
Fashion turned the camera on itself.
Couture Meets Self Worship
The concept played with modern narcissism in the most stylish way possible. Couture looks paired with the ultimate symbol of self documentation: the selfie stick. What could have felt gimmicky instead read as commentary.
Saskia, known for her androgynous edge and striking bone structure, delivered intensity rather than playfulness. Her poses felt deliberate, almost confrontational. As if asking whether self obsession is empowerment, satire, or simply the new normal.
The contrast between high fashion craftsmanship and casual tech accessory created tension. And tension makes good fashion imagery.
Sharp Styling, Strong Narrative
Styled by Karl Templer, the wardrobe leaned into dramatic silhouettes and high impact pieces. Structured tailoring, bold textures, and sculptural shapes elevated the narrative beyond novelty.
Hair by Shay Ashual and makeup by Mark Carrasquillo kept the beauty direction modern and polished. Nothing distracted from the central idea. The focus remained on image making itself.
Jansson’s photography maintained a crisp, editorial clarity. Clean composition allowed the concept to breathe while emphasizing Saskia’s commanding presence.
Why It Worked
The shoot succeeded because it understood the cultural moment. The selfie stick was more than a gadget. It symbolized a shift in how we curate identity.
By pairing it with couture, Interview blurred the line between performance and authenticity. Are we documenting ourselves, or constructing ourselves?
Saskia de Brauw embodied that ambiguity perfectly.
The overall mood was clear. Self aware, fashion forward, and just a little bit ironic.
