Spanish ceramic artist Abi Castillo creates enchanting sculptures that blur the line between functional art and storytelling. Her pieces, often adorned with vibrant flowers or perched birds, evoke a sense of playful introspection, mirroring the relationships between humans, nature, and inner worlds.
“For as long as I can remember, people have called me ‘Big Eyes,’” Castillo shares, referencing a legacy passed down from her paternal grandmother. This nickname and its significance inform her work, where wide, expressive eyes dominate her characters. They serve as windows into self-reflection and reminders of the fleeting, sometimes chaotic nature of life.
Castillo’s sculptures, ranging from standalone figurines to functional ceramics, invite viewers to look inward. “Each of my characters reflects a part of myself,” she explains, “my connection to nature and the little girl I still carry within me.” Through these works, she transforms the act of seeing into a metaphor for understanding oneself and the natural world.
As she transitions into a larger studio, Castillo is experimenting with new formats, including jewelry, to expand her creative language. Explore more of her creations on her website and stay updated through her Instagram.
