SZA, But Make It Vans, Her Latest Collab by Sophie Jones

SZA has always dressed like someone who refuses to be told what she’s supposed to look like. It’s not about being a rebel, it’s about intuition. One day she’s in a Vivienne Westwood corset, the next she’s barefoot in a thrifted tee, and somehow it always works because it’s hers. That’s the same spirit Vans is now betting on, naming her their first artistic director in a multiyear partnership. The move feels less like a corporate stunt and more like a continuation of SZA’s ongoing collaboration with style itself.

Her relationship with fashion has been quietly building momentum. Last year she surprised everyone with her SKIMS campaign, bringing a softness and grounded sensuality to the brand’s slick minimalism. Before that, she lent her energy to Crocs, spinning the foam clog into something playful and deeply personal. Neither felt like forced partnerships. Instead, they felt like SZA taking what was already a part of her everyday life and amplifying it. Vans is another natural extension of that. The sneakers have long been a fixture in her rotation, showing up in her videos, on stage, and in paparazzi candids where comfort clearly wins over spectacle.

Her first official drop with the brand spotlights the Knu Skool, a chunky low-top that first appeared in the late 90s and has recently crept back into rotation. The campaign, shot by Sophie Jones, frames SZA against wide-open spaces, pairing the exaggerated tongue and oversized laces with her effortless sense of being rooted and expansive at once. It’s a sneaker that feels nostalgic but still alive, like something you’d dig out of a box in your garage and immediately wear with pride.

What makes this collaboration compelling isn’t just the product. It’s the fact that SZA, a self-described alt artist who constantly pushes the edges of R&B, is now translating that restless inventiveness into a fashion house that thrives on subcultures. Vans is punk, skate, street, and now, a little bit Ctrl.

The black and white Knu Skool is available now, but this partnership feels like it’s just getting started.
