Zara Gets a Little Catty With Its Halloween CATS Collection
Halloween fashion has a habit of becoming either aggressively literal or strangely expensive-looking for something you will wear exactly once. Zara, apparently, would prefer we take a different approach. For its new CATS capsule, the Spanish retailer is making a fairly convincing argument that a little feline eccentricity belongs in the wardrobe well beyond October 31.

Inspired by the musical Cats, the 20-piece collection is less about assembling a last-minute costume and more about finding out how much personality one outfit can handle before things get interesting.
Photographed by Jasa Muller, with artwork by Muller and styling by Danny Reed, the campaign is gloriously committed to the bit. Models Kai Schreiber, Stef Bonomo, and Sam Davis move between feline references, exaggerated silhouettes and the occasional accessory that looks like it might have its own agenda.
There is a logo T-shirt and fuzzy cat-ear hat for anyone easing into the situation. Then things get considerably less subtle. A glossy black mini dress arrives with claw gloves, while a long faux-fur coat is paired with gray stirrup leggings and pointed pumps. It is giving backstage at a very fashionable production of Cats, except nobody has to sing.
The collection also has a slightly aggressive streak. Pointed shoulders mimic the shape of cat ears, leopard-print denim gets paired with distressed knits, and a spiked choker adds just enough attitude to suggest the wearer probably isn’t interested in being petted. Lace trousers, a white fringed vest and furry accessories push the theatrical references further without making every look feel like a Halloween party invitation.
Muller’s campaign imagery deserves its own moment. Rainbow streaks, oversized yellow eyes and sliced-up portraits interrupt the photographs, giving the models a slightly surreal quality. Schreiber, Bonomo and Davis aren’t simply wearing the clothes; they’re playing characters. The result feels closer to a fashion-school fever dream than a traditional retail campaign, which is a compliment.
And while the cat ears are obviously doing some of the heavy lifting, the more interesting pieces are arguably the ones that could survive without them. The faux-fur outerwear, dramatic black separates, animal-print denim and textured knits have enough going on to earn a place in an actual fall wardrobe.
That is the trick with a collection like this. Nobody necessarily needs another Halloween costume. But a little theatricality? A furry hat? A pair of gloves that look like they belong to a particularly temperamental house cat?
Zara seems to understand that sometimes getting dressed should be a little ridiculous. And honestly, there are worse things to be than overdressed and mildly feline.
